Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) occurs in 15-20% of people and a low FODMAP diet can help about 75% of people with IBS. This means that a low FODMAP diet could help 11-15% of the population.
The clients who present to nutritionists are even more likely to experience food intolerances, so regardless of your nutrition specialty, the chance of you seeing clients that have IBS is exceptionally high.
But FODMAPs aren’t currently taught in the curriculum of nutrition courses. They might be mentioned in passing, but the low FODMAP diet is one of the most complicated dietary strategies there is. Yes, it’s definitely learnable, but it’s not something you can easily pick up from reading a book. In fact, even if you wanted to learn it from a book, there aren’t any textbooks on the low FODMAP diet.

Progression Through the Low FODMAP DietThe third module moves you through the later stages of the low FODMAP diet… testing for FODMAP tolerance levels, personalising the diet for individual needs and addressing client expectations.

Professional Development in FODMAPs is a sound investment
The low FODMAP diet is successful in relieving symptoms in around 75% of people with IBS. And it’s backed by science. This is not a fad diet. It’s a medical therapeutic diet that’s currently the best strategy for managing IBS symptoms.
Yet the low FODMAP diet isn’t currently taught in university courses, or if it is, it barely covers the fundamentals. And since there’s no textbook on the subject, the only way to learn it yourself is to immerse yourself in the scientific literature – think how much time that would take! A better approach is to do a structured course with practical activities that will guide you through the low FODMAP diet to ensure that you have skills and knowledge you need to bring it into your nutrition practice.

About the Instructor
Dr Glenda Bishop is a Registered Nutritionist, neuroscientist, wellness coach and educator. She is also a fully trained and experienced university educator, having worked as a lecturer at Monash University before starting her nutrition practice. Glenda’s own practice, A Less Irritable Life, specialises in Irritable Bowel Syndrome and FODMAPs. In addition to her professional understanding of IBS, Glenda’s personal understanding of the day-to-day challenges that IBS creates stems from her being diagnosed with IBS 25 years ago. Glenda’s mission is to help people with IBS to live a less irritable life – whether by helping clients who have IBS directly or by training nutrition professionals so that they can help clients with IBS in their own practice.

How does the Facebook group work?

What can the Professional Mentoring session be used for?
The primary purpose of this 1:1 session is to answer additional questions about the low FODMAP diet and how you can apply it most effectively in your nutrition practice. This will look different for everyone, but may include discussions relating to creation of meal plans, troubleshooting current client challenges, gaining perspective on how to work with current clients, or anything else that will make it more effective for you to apply the low FODMAP diet in your practice.
Can I claim CPD hours for this course?
While the course is not officially registered with any organisation for CPD, most organisations don’t require formal registration in order to for you to claim the training as part of your professional development portfolio. This will depend on which organisation you are registered with.
At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate of enrolment, indicating that the course involved 8 hours of learning and 6 hours of practical activities. There is also an assignment included in this course, which you can submit to Dr Glenda Bishop for feedback. As such, you may be able to apply for assessable CPD with your organisation if the low FODMAP diet is relevant to one of your professional development learning goals.

I am not a nutrition professional, but I have IBS and want to learn about the low FODMAP diet. Can I do this course?
This course is designed to teach nutrition professionals about the low FODMAP diet and as such is taught in a way that assumes a university level of nutrition knowledge. Because of that, this course is not suitable for people with IBS who don't have training in nutrition. Also, this course is not designed to provide support to people with IBS who may benefit from following a low FODMAP.
